About your treatment

What happens once your GP sends in your referral?

Selecting an Honorary Consultant

Once St Luke's receives your referral it is reviewed by our Medical Secretary to find out which of our Honorary Consultants you should see. If this isn't clear then we may contact your GP for clarification.

A letter is sent to our Honorary Consultant along with your referral letter asking them to see you as a St Luke's patient. The Medical Secretary will also write to you to inform you of the Honorary Consultant to whom your referral has been sent.

The appointment

The next stage in the process is that the Honorary Consultant's secretary will contact you to arrange a mutually convenient appointment.

Depending upon the nature of your referral the Honorary Consultant may do one of the following things following your referral:

  • Arrange to provide treatment in the Honorary Consultant's NHS Hospital
  • Provide a referral back in to your local system
  • Provide you with a written report

You should always be aware that you may be responsible for any expense incurred i.e. Tests, x-rays etc. unless this has been agreed with St Luke's in advance.
